Nor Hafizah Pertiwi. 2023. “Students’ Problems in Writing Thesis of English Language Education Study Programme of UINSI Samarinda.” Thesis, Language Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, State Islamic University Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research is under the guidance of Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the first supervisor, and Mrs. Nadia Sya’ya, M.Pd. M.TESOL as the second supervisor.
Writing skills are one of the most important aspects for students in learning English. It is called a daunted skill that must be mastered by students. During education at UINSI Samarinda, it is common for the researcher to find students who feel that writing a thesis is a very dreaded scourge. The researcher asked a few short questions to several English students who were writing their theses at the time, and they all responded that they were having difficulties writing on it. This makes the researcher interested in examining what problems are faced by English students, especially those who, while the researcher is conducting research, are working on their theses, including factors that cause those problems to happen and possible strategies to help them reduce the issues.
This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. Students from the Department of English Education’s tenth and twelfth semesters in the academic year of 2022/2023 who have completed all courses and were working on a thesis were the subject of this research. The data was gathered through interviews and analyzed according to Miles, Huberman, and Saldana’s Interactive Model.
Students experience several problems during writing a thesis which can be categorized into three factors, namely psychological, sociocultural, and linguistic factors. Psychologically, students encounter problems with their motivation, self-esteem, and feelings of anxiety. In the sociocultural realm, students experience problems related to student-supervisor relationships, learning the related subject, and social relationships among students. Meanwhile, from linguistic factors, students experience problems related to grammar, sentence structure, diction, and process. Some possible strategies to reduce the problems that affect students’ thesis writing include using tools to help with writing, seeking advice and feedback from supervisors, seeking advice and comments from friends, and engaging in writing exercises to improve skills.
