This thesis attempted know the influence of the English teacher's strategy on the motivation of eleventh-grade students of science majors. Many students did not like the English lesson. They considered the English subject difficult and tedious. As known, the teacher is crucial as an educator and facilitator in teaching and learning activities. In teaching English, a teacher has a lot of ways of arranging strategy. Therefore, the formulation of the problem: Is there an influence on the English teacher's strategy toward students' motivation, and How far does the English teacher's strategy influence students' motivation in the eleventh-grade of science major in Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Samarinda?. The objective research was to know if there is an influence on the English teacher's strategy toward students' motivation and how far the influence it has on student motivation.
This research was quantitative research with a descriptive research type. This research intended to describe the data results presented using numeral data. The population was used for eleventh-grade students majoring in science, totaling 180 students. The instrument was used questionnaire. The data collection technique was the questionnaire containing 55 validated statements. Furthermore, the data analysis technique used is descriptive statistical analysis, prerequisite analysis, namely the normality test and linearity test, simple linear regression, and the coefficient of determination. Then, the hypothesis test used is a simple regression test (t-test).
The results of the study showed that there was a positive and significant influence between the teacher's strategy for teaching English on the motivation of the eleventh-grade students of the science major at Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 2 Samarinda. The value of the correlation coefficient r(xy) amounted to 0.356, the coefficient of determination r2(xy) amounted to 0.126, and the value of the hypothesis test on the t-test shows a significant value obtained of 0.026 which is 0.05 less than the significance level and tcount (2.314) ≥ ttable ( 2.026). Then, the magnitude of the influence was shown by the value of the determination coefficient r2(xy) amounted to 0.126, meaning that students' motivation influenced by the English teacher's strategy amounted to 12.6%. Meanwhile, the students' motivation was influenced by other factors outside of teacher strategy including, learner personality, learner attitude, learning style, and the relationship between languages. So, it could be said that the English teacher's strategy has a low effect on student motivation.
