This research categories and explains idiomatic expressions in Siân Heder’s film “CODA” with a focus on their relevance to English learning and teaching. This research examines the use of a movie script about Child of Deaf Adult (CODA) people as a medium for English language learning in ELT. The findings show that the CODA movie script uses many idioms. Phrasal Verb, tournure, irreversible binominal, phrasal compound, and incorporating verb idioms are idiomatic expressions.
This research used descriptive and qualitative methods. This research analyses idiomatic expression and their meanings in CODA contexts. The researcher was a main instrument for data collection. Second, observation sheets quantified CODA idiomatic expressions. The researcher observed CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) idiomatic expressions using screenplay/movie scripts to collect data. Children of Deaf Adult (CODA) idiomatic expressions were examined by the researcher. This research used John W. Creswell’s data analysis method.
After analysis, The CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) movie script has 5 categories of Idioms exist, 188 idiomatic expressions. Phrasal verb idioms occur 153 times and tournure 12 times. The phrasal compound idiom appears 13 times and the irreversible binominal idioms 2 times. 8 times in the corpus, the incorporating verb idiom is identified. Phrasal verb idioms were most common in Child of Deaf Adult (CODA) movie scripts, according to idiomatic expressions. The meaning of idiomatic expressions in the CODA (Child of Deaf Adult) movie script were assessed using dialog and narrative context.
