The Correlation Between Students’ English Listening Skill And Pronunciation In The Sixth Semester Of UINSI Samarinda In Academic Year 2023/2024

Thesis, English Language Study Program, Education and Teacher Training Faculty, State Islamic Univeristy Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This Research is under guidance of Dr. H. Shafa, S.PdI, M.Pd as the first advisor and Anis Komariah, M.Pd as the second advisor. A language is an essential tool in communication, for example English as the lingua franca. Indonesia primarily has been taught English as foreign language since elementary school until university. English divided into 4 skills: listening, speaking, writing and reading. Students should listen first before they can speak. The more they listen, the more they can speak. Listening and speaking are interdependent. The method used in this research was quantitative research with correlation design. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was correlational between English Education students listening skill and pronunciation also, whether there was significant contribution between English Education students English listening skill in the sixth semester of State Islamic University Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. The population of this study was 69 students of the sixth semester in English Education program of State Islamic University Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. The researcher used tests as the instruments, Listening test and Pronunciation test. The result of this research presents that the t-score was 1.362 and t-table was 2.093 at 5% of significance level. It meant t-score was lower than t-table (1.362 ˂ 2.093). It can be indicated that the students English listening skill not determined students’ pronunciation skill in the sixth semester English education students of State Islamic University Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. In addition, based on the squared correlation coefficient ( = 0.8940 gathered, English listening skill was considered to have contribution of 89.40% towards pronunciation. It can be indicated that the student’s English listening skill has significant contribution to students’ pronunciation skill, especially in the sixth semester of UINSI Samarinda.
