Increasing Students’ Speaking Ability Through English Language Speech Assistant (ELSA) Application Of Ninth Grade Students At SMPN 34 Samarinda In Academic Year 2023/2024

This research was under guidance of Mr. Dr. Shafa, M.Pd as the first advisor and Ms. Nadia Sya’ya, M.Pd., M. TESOL as the second advisor. Speaking was a complex process of oral communication that need much ability, including pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. Speaking ability was regarded one of the most difficult aspects in language learning. In addition, there were many speaking problems that has been faced by students, especially in junior high school. The most common problem that students faced were they have very little knowledge about vocabulary and grammar, low motivation in learning English, and students feel anxious in speaking English. This research aims to find out of ELSA application in increasing students’ speaking ability of ninth grade students’ of SMPN 34 Samarinda. This research focused on quasi-experimental research in two class pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was class IX of SMPN 34 Samarinda in the academic year 2023/2024 which consists of 190 students. The researcher took 2 class as the research sample, namely class IX-A as the experimental class contained by 32 students and IX-D as the control class contained by 32 students. The data obtained from the speaking ability test while doing the speaking by themed picture in the pre-test and post-test. It can be concluded from the results of this study that the use of ELSA application was not able to increase students’ speaking ability which includes pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. This can be seen in the average score of student’s pre-tests in experimental class which was 35.75 and control class which was 32.5. and then the average score of student’s post-tests in experimental class increase to 57.75 and control class increase to 33 and from the result of pre-test and also post-test was not reached the school minimum completeness criteria. This means that the use of ELSA application was not able to increase students’ speaking ability of ninth grade class of SMPN 34 Samarinda in academic year 2023/2024.
