An Analysis Of Grammatical Errors In Translation Result Made By The Eighth Grade Students Of MTs. Labbaika In Academic Year 2021/2022

Language is one of the most important aspect to connect people. In this era, most people tend not to not use English as a foreign language, but now it applies to people’s daily life. But unlike our mother tongue, learning English has so many difficulties to face, especially when live in a country with English as a foreign language. One of the biggest challenge for people who is to translate the words they want to express, especially in plural nouns form. This research aimed to find kinds of grammatical error and to find the most common grammatical errors conducted by the students.
In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research. By descriptive qualitative research, the researcher has described the student’s error in translation plural form and then the reseacher indentify, classify the error in their translation made by the students based on surface strategy taxonomy; omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The population of this research were the students at MTs. Labbaika Samarinda at the second semester of the eighth grade which consisted of 211 students but the sample of this research were 31 students. In collecting data, the researcher used test and interview. The researcher gave the paper and asked the students to translate plural sentences and the total item task were 8 numbers. Then, the researcher analyzed them based on surface strategy taxonomy. After that, the researcher interviewed 5 students who had the highest amount of errors.
After analyzing the data, the researcher found that many students’ error in translating plural. The total number of error are 92 items. The result of this research showed that higest percentage of errors is misformation (alternating form) 30%. The lowest are addition (simple) 8% and misordering 8%. While the other types of error were omission 27%, addition (regularization) 9%, and misformation (reguarization) 18%. The main source of errors in this reseach was mother tongue influence (interlingual errors). It was influenced by the native language which interferes with target language learning. The second was intralingual errors, which caused the learners misunderstood about the pattern and failed to apply it into irregular plural form.
