This research was supervised by Mr. Umar Fauzan, M.Pd as the first supervisor and Mrs. Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as the second supervisor.
Reading comprehension influenced by each the individual students. The average of the students nowadays are less interest to reading, their enthusiasm in reading a news, sciences, or other texts is too little because they are difficult to understand the meaning of the text they read, it makes them lazy to learn and comprehend deeply. The students’ ability in reading comprehension definitely different, influenced by several factors such as the different way the teacher teach, students’ motivation in learning especially English subject, and also students interest in reading itself. Based on that the researcher want to find out the students’ reading comprehension, not only in one school but in two schools that is Senior High School (SMA) and Islamic Senior High School (MA), with the reasons which MA has many lessons and more focus on religious studies than SMA which has more little and not focus on specific lessons in the school, and after find out the students’ reading comprehension in each school then the researcher would be compare how their reading comprehension in the two schools.
The method that has been used during this research was descriptive quantitative method. The instrument used in this research was test. Data collection based on the students’ answers of the test. The population of this research was 175 at students of XI-MIPA grade in SMAN 4 Samarinda and 144 students of XI- MIPA grade in MAN 2 Samarinda. The total of sample from two schools was 63 students which 35 students of SMAN 4 Samarinda and 28 students of MAN 2 Samarinda with the calculated from the stratified sampling method.
Based on the result of this research, the researcher found the comparison of students’ reading comprehension at two schools. First, students’ reading comprehension of five aspects at XI-MIPA grade students in SMAN 4 Samarinda on procedure text was mastered to main idea aspect, on narrative text was mastered to detail information aspect. While at XI-MIPA grade students in MAN 2 Samarinda on procedure text was mastered to supporting idea aspect, on narrative text was mastered to main idea and understanding vocabulary aspects. Second, students’ reading comprehension based on the types of reading text, students of XI-MIPA grade in SMAN 4 Samarinda was better to narrative text while students of XI-MIPA grade in MAN 2 Samarinda was better to procedure text. The last, students’ reading comprehension as a whole test, students of XI- MIPA grade in MAN 2 Samarinda was better with the mean score 85.35 than students of XI-MIPA grade in SMAN 4 Samarinda with the mean score 82.28.
