The background of this study focused on the difficulties faced by teacher candidates in teaching English during the teaching practicum program. The teaching practicum program is one of the requirements to become a bachelor for students English education department. This program is supposed to improve student English skills in teaching English. However, this teaching practicum program is a challenge for the teacher candidates, and they are responsible for dealing with these difficulties during the teaching practicum program. Some teacher candidate face difficulties in teaching English during the teaching practicum program. The difficulty caused in several situations that teacher candidates had not encountered before. Therefore the researcher aimed to: 1) find out and describe teacher candidates’ difficulties in teaching English during the teaching practicum program, 2) find out the methods of teacher candidates’ used in teaching English during the teaching practicum program.
This research used a qualitative research with the case study method. The instrument of this research was the researcher herself. The researcher collected the data through interviews with informants. There were 10 informants in this research who had completed the teaching practicum program in the English Education Department of States Islamic University of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda in the academic year 2021/2022. The informants were those who had difficulty in teaching English at the junior or high school during the teaching practicum program.
The result of this research showed that there five difficulties in teaching English faced by teacher candidate during the teaching practicum program. These difficulties were: (1) difficulty in classroom management, (2) difficulty in adjusting to students’ character, (3) difficulty in designing the lesson plan on preparation problem, (4) difficulty in dealing with supervising teachers’ response of evaluation problem, and (5) lack of self-confidence of personal problem. Then, there were three methods to solve those difficulties that teacher candidates used, namely: (1) game and reward, (2) students center, and (3) applying of the principle of teaching.
