Students’ Difficulties In Speaking English Of Eleventh Grade Of SMA Negeri 7 Samarinda

Thesis, English Education Department, Teacher Training and Tarbiyah Faculty, State Islamic University (UIN) Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda. This research was guided by Mr. Dr. Shafa, S.Pd.I., M.Pd as the first supervisor, and Mrs. Nadia Sya’ya, M.Pd., M.TESOL as the second supervisor.
Speaking is one of the skills that students must master; by speaking, students can exchange thoughts, ideas, and opinions. However, for students, speaking English is difficult due to differences in culture, pronunciation, vocabulary, and sentence structure. This is more the one of the factors that cause students to have difficulty in speaking English. Based on this phenomenon, the researcher decided to find out the factors and causes of students’ difficulties in speaking English of eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 7 Samarinda.
This research used a qualilative descriptive method. In addition, the instruments used in this research were observation, interview, and documentation. Data collection collected through observation, students interview, and document analysis in English learning process. The subject of this research were eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 7 Samarinda, with 8 students as respondents.
Based on the results of this research, the researcher found: (1) the factors of students’ difficulties in speaking English of eleventh grade were caused by 2 factors, namely linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors. Linguistic factors are related to language, including a lack of vocabulary, poor in grammar, and a lack of pronunciation. In contrast, non-linguistic factors are related to the individual self, including fear of mistakes, anxiety, shyness, lack of confidence and lack of motivation. Meanwhile, (2) the causes of students’ difficulties in speaking English of eleventh grade were caused by 2 factors, namely internal and external factors. Internal factors are factors that come from within the individual, which include language obstacles and negative effects. In contrast, external factors come from outside the individual, including class factors, teachers, students, and other factors related to cultural and linguistic differences.
