This research is under guidance of Bahrani, M.Pd as advisor I and Rostanti Toba, M.Pd as advisor II.
Vocabulary is the basic element in mastering of English language. It is the main point to understand the language well. Without mastering vocabulary, the student will difficult in understanding and learning English subject. The objectives of this research were to find out the factor affect in students’ vocabulary difficulties and to know the most dominant kinds of students’vocabulary difficulties at second grade of SMP Negeri 43 Samarinda.
This research used qualitative research. The research instruments were interview and test. The aimed for interview was to know the factor affect students’ difficulties in vocabulary mastery. The objective of test was to know the most dominant kinds of students’ difficulties in vocabulary mastery. The research subject in this research was the second grade students of SMP Negeri 43 Samarinda which consists of 23 students. The technique analysis in this research used qualitative analysis by Miles and Huberman.
Based on the result in this research, there were four factors which contributes in students’ vocabulary difficulties at second grade students of SMP Negeri 43 Samarinda such as meaning, appropriate word, motivation and pronunciation. While the most dominant kind of students’ vocabulary difficulties especially in part of speech was preposition 101 errors, followed by noun classification was about 84 errors, Verb classification was 100 errors, and the last adjective classification was 46 errors.
